Nuclear safety case engineers help organisations demonstrate that nuclear facilities, activities and changes can be managed safely. It is a specialist career, but entry is not limited to people who already have “safety case” in their job title. Engineers, operators, technical authors and other nuclear professionals may all have relevant experience.

What does a nuclear safety case engineer do?

A nuclear safety case sets out why a facility or activity is safe. It brings together structured claims, arguments and supporting evidence, rather than relying on a single assessment or document.

Responsibilities vary by employer, project and level of seniority, but nuclear safety case jobs may involve:

  • Producing or updating safety case documentation.
  • Gathering evidence from engineering, operations and maintenance teams.
  • Supporting hazard identification and risk assessment activities.

Professionals from other regulated or high-hazard sectors may have transferable experience. Examples include defence, aerospace, oil and gas, chemicals, rail and major infrastructure. Technicians and people with HNC, HND or apprenticeship backgrounds should not automatically rule themselves out. Some vacancies may accept substantial relevant experience instead of a particular degree, while others will specify an academic requirement.

Vacancies can range from development roles to senior or principal appointments. Requirements may include a technical degree, an HNC or HND with relevant experience, or evidence of competence gained through an apprenticeship and subsequent work.

Professional registration can support career development, but candidates should check whether a vacancy requires it or merely lists it as desirable. Useful development activities may include training in hazard assessment, risk management, technical report writing, systems engineering and nuclear safety principles.

When reviewing a role, distinguish between essential and desirable criteria. Also check whether the employer expects previous nuclear experience or is willing to consider another highly regulated sector.

Security clearance and site requirements
